The word kakegama means 'putting the kettle on' and refers to boiling water in a kettle on the hearth after preparing a tea room and greeting guests for a tea gathering. Originally when the Iemoto was the host most of these tea gatherings took place in the tea rooms at the Iemoto, but today Iemoto kakegama are sometimes held at the houses of families with a strong tie to the Iemoto.
